Medical Information on Minoxidil, Tretinoin & DHT Blocker Therapy
Targeted Hair Regrowth Backed by Science
This treatment combines Minoxidil 5%, Tretinoin 0.025% to 0.05%, and a topical DHT blocker (Finasteride or Dutasteride) in a fast absorbing, alcohol free hydrogel.
It is designed to tackle hair loss at multiple levels by stimulating growth, improving delivery of active ingredients to the scalp, and reducing the effects of dihydrotestosterone (DHT), the hormone most commonly associated with pattern hair loss.
How Does It Work?
Minoxidil helps stimulate hair follicles and prolong the growth phase of the hair cycle, encouraging thicker and healthier hair growth.
Tretinoin promotes scalp cell turnover and may improve the penetration and effectiveness of Minoxidil.
Finasteride and Dutasteride belong to a group of medicines known as 5 alpha reductase inhibitors. They work by reducing the production of DHT within the scalp, helping to prevent the miniaturisation of hair follicles and slow the progression of androgenetic alopecia.
Together, these ingredients support improved hair density, reduced shedding, and long term maintenance of existing hair.
How Do I Apply It?
-Apply once daily, preferably in the evening, to a clean and dry scalp.
-Use 0.5 mL to 1 mL as advised by your clinician and apply directly to the affected areas.
-Gently massage into the scalp using clean fingertips.
-Avoid washing your hair for at least 4 hours after application.
-Wash your hands thoroughly after use.
When Will I See Results?
Weeks 1 to 4: Some individuals experience an increase in hair shedding during the early stages of treatment. This is usually temporary and can be a sign that older hairs are being replaced by new growth.
Weeks 6 to 12: Early signs of improvement may begin, including reduced shedding and the appearance of new hairs.
Months 3 to 6: Hair may begin to feel thicker, fuller, and healthier, with improvements in density and overall appearance.
Months 9 to 12: Optimal results are typically achieved with consistent long term use.
What Do I Need to Avoid?
-Do not apply to broken, irritated, or inflamed skin.
-Avoid getting the product into the eyes, mouth, or other mucous membranes.
-Avoid using harsh scalp products that may increase irritation.
-Avoid contact with pregnant or breastfeeding individuals until the product has completely dried.
-Do not stop treatment abruptly if you wish to maintain results.
Are There Any Side Effects?
Common side effects may include:
Mild redness, dryness, itching, or flaking of the scalp.
Temporary irritation or peeling associated with Tretinoin.
Increased sensitivity to sunlight. Daily sunscreen use is recommended for exposed skin.
Rarely, systemic absorption of a DHT blocker may contribute to:
Reduced libido.
Sexual dysfunction.
Breast tenderness or swelling.
Low mood, anxiety, or depressive symptoms.
Allergic reactions such as rash, itching, or swelling.
These effects are considered uncommon with topical use. If you experience significant side effects, mood changes, emotional distress, or any symptoms that concern you, stop treatment and contact your OptiOptu clinician.
Can I Use Other Hair Products?
Yes. Wait at least 30 minutes after application before using styling products, oils, serums, or other scalp treatments.
Can I Style or Colour My Hair?
Yes. We recommend avoiding application immediately before or after hair colouring, bleaching, perming, or other chemical treatments to minimise scalp irritation.
Will I Need to Use This Long Term?
Hair regrowth and maintenance require ongoing treatment. Continued use is generally recommended to maintain results and help prevent further progression of hair loss.
